Sea Otter Safari Tour FAQs

  • Yes! You can customise your all-inclusive holiday to include any combination of sea otter viewing, guided fishing and/or adventures to explore Kyuquot.

  • The best way to capture great images of sea otters is to spend time observing their behaviours.

Keen observers get the best shots.

Watch the otters, learn their habits, and be patient.  Almost every great otter image came as a result of sitting quietly in one spot for a long period of time.

  • Yes, while not useful on the boats, your tripod will be excellent when photographing sea otters at the lodge or from beaches on your adventures.

  • We recommend a telephoto lens ranging from 100 mm to 600 mm.

An 800 mm lens will produce professional results.

A 1.4x teleconverter that mounts between your camera body and telephoto lens will also increases your focal length.

Telephoto lens are essential. Capturing sea otters on film is tricky. They move quickly and are always bobbing in the ocean swells. Otters also camouflage well with the ocean colours and hide amongst the kelp.

It’s also important to keep a responsible and respectful distance from the otters.

  • Use fast speeds like 1/800s to 1/2000s to capture swimming, grooming, or acrobatic movements.

  • Sea Otter Lodge offers unforgettable experiences, delivered responsibly.

We follow the guidelines as set by North Island Mammal Stewardship Association. We also follow the principle of ʔiisaak (pronounced ee-saak) which is the core value of respect for all in our living world as practised by the Ka:’yu:’k’t’h’ / Che:k’tles7et’h’ First Nations.

We see ourselves as stewards of the waters & lands upon which we operate, with a responsibility to protect our marine ecosystem for future generations.
