Planning a trip to Sea Otter Lodge in Kyuquot, BC? We've gathered answers to the most common questions about getting here, what to pack, what to expect at the lodge, and the many adventures available in the area. Whether you're coming for fishing, kayaking, wildlife watching, or just relaxing with family, our FAQ page is here to help you feel prepared and excited for your West Coast getaway.

    • Yes! Fur friends are welcome.

    • No! The kitchen is fully set up, complete with appliances.

    • Sea Otter Lodge features an industrial propane stove.

  • Sea Otter Lodge:

    • All-inclusive packages include all meals lavishly prepared for a 6-person maximum group size on kayak angling trips.

    • Catering quotes for meals are available by request for tailored lodge rental groups with 6-12 guests.

    Happy Place Cottage:

    • Dinner meals can be offered depending on your group size, preferences and days of stay. Please ask for a catering quote.

    • Yes! There’s lots of exploring to be done in the local area or a boat ride away.

    • Cell service ends outside of Campbell River. There is some cell service at Woss Lake.

    • There is no cell phone service in Kyuquot.

    • The Vhf radio is an important communication tool in Kyuquot. Ch. 86 broadcasts all over Kyuquot Sound.

    • A hand-held GPS is also a useful safety tool.

    • iPhone 14 or higher with an IOS18 or later can text via satellite, making the iPhone a useful safety device.

    • Guests may bring their own wine, beer & spirits with them. There are no liquor licences or alcohol sales in Kyuquot.

    • If you’re driving from Nanaimo to Kyuquot, Sayward is the last place you can buy wine, beer or spirits.

  • Sea Otter Lodge:

    • We provide crew accommodations and catered services during fall, winter or early spring months for long term stays. ex. One week minimum stay and lasting for months, as long as needed for duration of work.

    Happy Place Cottage:

    • Off-season crew accommodation with catered service can be booked in the fall, winter and early spring months for both short & long term stays.

    • No, there are no roads to Kyuquot - where the road ends, Kyuquot begins!

    • This remote village, spread across a cluster of islands off Vancouver Island, is only accessible by boat, making water travel the main way to get here.

    • Yes, you can travel by boat, airplane or helicopter. 

    • Sea Otter Lodge has over 90 ft of deep, protected boat moorage on our private island for guests only. 

    • Airplanes can land in  Kyuquot Village harbour and taxi to Sea Otter Lodge. 

    • We have a helicopter landing location for guests who travel by helicopter.

    • Yes, you can visit without a boat.

    • Lodge rental guests can be picked up in Fair Harbour for an additional charter fee. 

    • We rent small watercraft vessels for guests to use on the protected waters around the lodge in Walter’s Cove.

    • Boat charters can also be booked to take you on special adventures.  

    • If you are seeking a longer holiday with even more adventure, you can start your holiday in Nootka Sound cruising on the historical MV Uchuck or flying on Air Nootka to Kyuquot.

    • The road ends in Fair Harbour. There is a parking area, general store and gas marina in Fair Harbour. 

    • Parking in Fair Harbour is a fee service operated by the Kyuquot Checleseht First Nations who offer daily, weekly and monthly fees for visitors.

    • It’s wise to book a reserved parking spot, especially on busy long weekends in the summer.

    • No, there is no scheduled ferry service from where the road ends in Fair Harbour to Kyuquot. Travel to Kyuquot is by private boat or plane only. 

    • Boat travel to the lodge is included in all-inclusive packages. Tailored lodge rental guests may reserve a boat charter for additional fees. 

    • Plane travel from Gold River to Kyuquot is by private charter or scheduled flights as offered by Air Nootka. The MV Uchuck offers weekly scheduled cruises to Kyuquot from Gold River.

    • Yes! All-inclusive packages cover all travel logistics from your arrival on Vancouver Island to your arrival at the lodge - excluding your air travel to the Island. We handle every detail of your stay to ensure a seamless, unforgettable experience. For tailored (non-inclusive) stays, we’re happy to help guide you through travel logistics, especially if it’s your first time visiting Kyuquot.

  • Add-on service:

    • We offer full-service fish processing for a price per pound of fish with airline approved boxes if needed

    Self-service:

    • We have a cleaning table on the dock, plus a covered dry space for using a vacuum sealer or bagging fish. 

    • We also have ample freezer space for you to transport your fish out in a cooler.

    • Happy Place is located in the village of Kyuquot on Walter’s Island. Kyuquot is a water-based village without any roads. A boardwalk connects the village of Kyuquot on Walter’s Island. 

    • Happy Place is Lot #1 on the Kyuquot Boardwalk. That’s why it’s affectionately known as #1 Happy Place!

    • There is free public moorage available on the government dock just a short walk from Happy Place Lodge. You can see your boat from the windows of the lodge.

    • There is a boardwalk that connects the government dock and lodge. A wheelbarrow is provided to help move your gear.

    • There is secure storage space in the cottage’s basement for your fishing gear.

    • We have an outdoor fishing cleaning table with water. Processing fish for freezing can be done on outdoor tables and freezer space is provided in the lodge basement.

    • We limit 6 guests per trip to offer a very individualized, exclusive fishing experience for everyone.

    • Just minutes away from the lodge!

    • Yes, if you purchase a fishing licence which permits transport of fish to your home destination.

  • Important tips: 

    • You will be fishing in Area 126/26.

    • The website will ask you if you want a salmon conservation stamp. Pay attention to select yes. 

    • You need to print out all the licence pages and keep the paper document with you when fishing to record your daily catch on your licence. 

    • You also need to keep your licence on hand when transporting your fish. The receipt does not serve as a license.

    • Our mothership guide is a certified captain with small vessel operator’s licence with marine first aid + Vhf operator’s licence + 25 tonne vessel marine operator’s licence + 4 decades of expert fishing experience.

    • Every boat!

    • If you are coming on an all-inclusive holiday, we organize all details of your customized trip, including boat travel and kayak fishing. Our captain will guide you for fishing & adventures.

    • Our fleet of fishing kayaks is top gear! We have 6 Makana 100 Vibe kayaks & 1 Hydra Vibe kayak all outfitted with Bixpy K1 motors & Yak Attack accessories.

    • For guests wanting more adventures, we also offer a paddleboard, single & double sea kayaks, canoe & rowboat for exploring.
